Celebrating wood, wind, and words
in St. Paul, Minnesota

What are Moments in the Park?
Moments in the park capture the essence of a sight, sound, scent, or sensation.
Moments are specific to a particular place and time. They often relate to the weather - wind, rain, snow, clouds - or seasonal changes in plants or animals - new leaves appearing, flowers blooming, birds singing.
Many of my moments are found in my local city park. But a "park" can be anywhere something catches your attention, your awareness, your imagination. I have found moments in the median of busy roads while running errands, in the play of light on the bathroom wall, and from the windows of airplanes.
The practice of being open to moments, of observing the particular details of a place and noticing changes from day to day and month to month, is a way of being mindful and present, of engaging with and appreciating the natural world wherever you happen to be.

Feathery Snow

Snowflakes collecting on grass leaves

I walked out of the office Friday afternoon to find big, feathery snow flakes filling the sky and half an inch of fluffy snow piled on my bike. It wasn't just on the broad surface of the seat. Tenacious mounds were collecting on the fenders, frame, handlebars, and even the gear shifter. Riding through it on my way home from the train station was an adventure. Forward motion was like flying through a star field in a space movie. Flakes pelted my face with soft dabs, and occasionally one would find its way into my collar and hit with a cold kiss.

Naturally, I had to make a stop in Horton Park to delight in the snow piled on every surface, from tree branches to blades of grass. Most of the delicate, airy flakes melted as soon as they hit the sidewalk. But the cold insulation of leaves formed platforms for pillowy piles.
