Celebrating wood, wind, and words
in St. Paul, Minnesota

What are Moments in the Park?
Moments in the park capture the essence of a sight, sound, scent, or sensation.
Moments are specific to a particular place and time. They often relate to the weather - wind, rain, snow, clouds - or seasonal changes in plants or animals - new leaves appearing, flowers blooming, birds singing.
Many of my moments are found in my local city park. But a "park" can be anywhere something catches your attention, your awareness, your imagination. I have found moments in the median of busy roads while running errands, in the play of light on the bathroom wall, and from the windows of airplanes.
The practice of being open to moments, of observing the particular details of a place and noticing changes from day to day and month to month, is a way of being mindful and present, of engaging with and appreciating the natural world wherever you happen to be.

As I was biking across the bridge over the Mississippi this morning, I caught sight of a large bird soaring downstream. My first thought, defaulting to the common and expected, was crow. But an instant later, its larger size and effortless glide registered, and I noticed the telltale white head. As I admired the bald eagle, I also noticed another biker riding across the bridge toward me. He seemed to have his gaze down at the path in front of him, apparently oblivious to the sight overhead. As we passed, I called, "Did you see the eagle?" He called back, "Oh yeah?" or maybe it was, "Oh? Yeah!" At any rate, I think he did look up and see it as it continued to soar toward a perch (perhaps a nest?) on the bank he was headed for. I was pleased to think I helped him start his day with a little morsel of wonder. And maybe he'll even look up a little more often as he rides and spot the next eagle himself.
