Moments in the Park
a nature journal,
Sample Chapter - June (PDF)

Concentrated and intense
Moments in the Park is composed of a single observation, distilled into one or two sentences, each day for a year. Each day's entry is carefully crafted, drawing on visual imagery, sound, scent, or touch, to create the sensation of one beautiful, unusual, or quietly striking moment. The moments are drawn from the normal course of my busy days, and will fit neatly into your busy days.

A daily habit
With one observation every day, 366 days in a row, Moments in the Park traces the cycle of the seasons. Bare branches against winter's cold skies, birds singing up the sun on spring mornings, the concentrated-summer flavor of tomatoes fresh off the vine, and trees burnished copper with autumn leaves. The daily observations are also an exercise of being in the moment at least once a day, through all of the year's ups and downs.

Urban flair
Most nature journals start with someone (usually a guy) going out alone into the wilderness. Moments in the Park revolves mostly around a one-acre park in the urban residential Hamline-Midway neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota. An urban lifestyle is integral to the observations, which come from walks with our dog, walks to the light rail station, bike rides to work, or time in the local playgrounds with my kids. Moments in the Park demonstrates that nature can be savored wherever you are, it just takes awareness and attention.

Good to share with a friend
I hope that Moments in the Park inspires you to notice and to capture the moments of your place and your life. Nature is everywhere, not just in the wilderness (though wilderness is wonderful and necessary). Nature is every day, in the nooks and crannies of your life, whatever else may be happening. Nature is for everyone.
