Appreciation

The phrase Moments in the Park was originally used to describe short prose poems inspired by observations on walks through Horton Park and other outdoor spaces. Throughout 2016, I crafted Moments in the Park as a daily practice. I have continued to write Moments in the Park, just not as frequently as that first year.
Here you will find the prose poems as well as expansions telling the story of the inspiration, reflecting on a related theme, or digging deeper into learning about the subject.
I also hope that you will be inspired to create your own Moments in the Park, in words, images, sound, or whatever medium suits you. If you would like to share your creations, I would be happy to post them!

A Perpendicular Universe

Moments have been on hiatus for a bit while I worked on putting together a longer piece. Inspired by a recent afternoon in a canoe with my dad and my daughters, it reflects on the connections between water and land. Even if we don't notice them, physical connections tie the two realms together. By noticing the connections, we can build relationships and create a more complete community.

Thick rafts of clouds float across the sky. Though their undersides are dark, sprays of light spilling from their edges bear witness to the brilliant sun lighting their tops.

Deep green drains out of an ash tree, leaving a crown of yellow, like syrup sinking to the bottom of a Sno Cone.

The setting moon dances, elusive, glinting behind leaves, a lover shy of her own beauty, until I turn my back and walk away. Looking over my shoulder, she stands in the open, revealing her full glory.

Labor Day, the unofficial "end of summer" was a perfect, sun-drenched afternoon. So the girls and I grabbed a box of sidewalk chalk and headed over to the park.
Sun-splashed leaves sparkle like my six year-old’s silver glitter shoes, while wind whispers ripples through the grass, chasing my three year-old across the lawn.

A peachy haze draws out sunrise, painting the sun a rich orange ball until it is high in the sky, and seems to linger through the day on the tops of trees beginning to color.
