Appreciation

The phrase Moments in the Park was originally used to describe short prose poems inspired by observations on walks through Horton Park and other outdoor spaces. Throughout 2016, I crafted Moments in the Park as a daily practice. I have continued to write Moments in the Park, just not as frequently as that first year.
Here you will find the prose poems as well as expansions telling the story of the inspiration, reflecting on a related theme, or digging deeper into learning about the subject.
I also hope that you will be inspired to create your own Moments in the Park, in words, images, sound, or whatever medium suits you. If you would like to share your creations, I would be happy to post them!

The tip of a fir branch claws its way out of a snowbank. After many long weeks of confinement, a hand reaching for lightness and release.

Leaves and twigs appearing beneath retreating snow tell the story of a difficult winter in a lost language of arboreal runes.

Wherever I stand, tiny ice crystals glitter in the line between me and the sun, as the very air sparkles with the glory of a clear morning after a snowfall.

Bright spring sun tunes rooflines, gutters, and rainspouts into a musical panorama of drip-drop plink-plop babbling brooks.

When I bought plane tickets to return from a conference in New Orleans on April 14, I didn't think I'd have to worry about a blizzard interrupting my travel plans. But instead of flying home that evening, I found myself in a burger joint on Carondolet Street, watching the near-whiteout conditions that had closed the Minneapolis airport on TV.
When I did make it home the next day, it was to find a foot and a half of snow on my driveway. Thankfully, my dad volunteered to bring over his snowblower. He was even kind enough to run the first few (most difficult) passes while I was getting the girls to bed. When I went back out to tackle the rest of the mess, I had a heck of a time getting it started. (I have never gotten the hang of starting lawn mowers either.) With my husband pushing and me pulling the starter, we eventually got it going.
As this seemingly never-ending winter wears on, it's getting harder and harder to see beauty in the ubiquitous snow. But, boy, that little green snowblower was a thing of beauty that night.

Snow’s texture whispers shadows of shadows, gently crunching where yesterday’s bright sun melted the surface to freeze overnight, soft and powdery east of the evergreens, where the sun did not reach.

Sticks and leaves draw heat to their dark shapes and sink into form-fitting cavities in the melting snow, like broken hearts and wishbones in a sprawling game of Operation.

Melting days have textured snowbanks in the boulevard, transforming them into a line of great wooly beasts trundling along the street.
